    I have to say I prefer the version directed by William Tyler from 1939, with Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff, David Niven as Edgar and Merle Oberon as Cathy. The scenes of Catherine and Heathcliff when they are younger and falling in love in the fields of heather are full of youthful innocence and passion. The scene where Ellen tells Cathy that Heathcliff overheard her when she said it would degrade her to marry him is a beautifully directed moment of suspenseful drama, and underscores the urgency Cathy feels in convincing Heathcliff she still loves him.
