    The only people to attend Catherine's funeral are Edgar, her husband, and the tenants and servants at Thrushcross Grange.

    In her letter to Ellen (Nelly), Isabella begs Nelly to tell her if Heathcliff "is a man? If so, is he mad? And if not, is he a devil?" The other occupants at Wuthering Heights also upset Isabella. Hareton won't allow her to kiss him, and Joseph uses his hand to stir their dinner. Hindley tells her to lock her door in case he mistakes her for Heathcliff and accidentally shoots her instead of Heathcliff. She has no maid and no bedroom. Heathcliff's room is locked, and Isabella must sleep on a chair in Hareton's room. She begs Nelly to visit her. At this point, Isabella feels she has no one and that her life is a nightmare.
