Though Rochester and Heathcliff are both brooding, passionate heroes, their stories have very different outcomes. Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre is a comedy ending in marriage, while Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights is a tragedy ending in death. The contrast may be connected to their heroines since both Jane and Catherine are fiercely independent thinkers, but Jane also has an innate moral sense that guides her actions. Both novels also employ gothic conventions such as eerie settings and dangerous characters.
