    Heathcliff appears an an unfriendly, inhospitable, angry man. There is obvious hostility between Heathcliff and Cathy. Lockwood, with his conventional mindset, cannot understand the unconventional events that occur at the Heights. Emily Bronte continues to create a mystery over the motives for Heathcliff's insensitive actions by withholding information that we must discover in subsequent chapters.
