He decides to marry her not because he loves her but to take revenge on Edgar for marrying Catherine. Edgar who is in the house when Heathcliff visits Catherine, becomes impatient when Catherine doesn't return to his room. He decides to confront Heathcliff and goes downstairs. First, he asks Catherine why she is wasting her time with this 'blackguard.' Next, he addresses Heathcliff directly saying:"Your presence is moral poison," and asks him to leave the house in three minutes.
Heathcliff treats Edgar with absolute contempt:"Cathy, this lamb of yours threatens like a bull!" Later, when Edgar realises that he has to fight with Heathcliff alone he breaks down in fear. Edgar is humiliated and Heathcliff departs saying: "I wish you joy of the milk-blooded coward,Cathy!"
