When Cathy first meets Linton, she is attracted to him. That is why she disobeys both Nelly and her father and goes off to Wuthering Heights to nurse him. Linton is very manipulative and also afraid of his father, Heathcliff. Linton allows himself in turn to be manipulated by Heathcliff, so that Cathy will marry him and Heathcliff will then get the rights to Thrushcross Grange. However, Cathy shows a great bit of spirit against Heathcliff, so much so that Heathcliff is forced to kidnap Cathy and not allow her to see her dying father until she has married Linton. Linton is often in a foul mood and doesn't seem to care as much for Cathy as he cares for Heathcliff's approval. As a result, Heathcliff is successful in his plan to inherit Thrushcross Grange, at least for a while.
