In Chapters 11 and 12 of "Wuthering Heights", how does Nelly misinterpret Catherine's actions?

    Nelly views Catherine as putting on her illness and attempting to gain the attention of both Edgar and Heathcliff through it. Due to her thoughts on this, Nelly ignores Catherine's rapid decline and Catherine gets worse as she feels ignored and unloved.

    Nelly does get put in her place by Edgar as he states, 'You knew your mistress's nature, and you encouraged me to harrass her...It was heartless!' So through Edgar we are led to believe that it wasn't just Nelly's misinterpretation, but deliberate callousness.
