Edgar Linton is changed by his love for Catherine, and is left arguably worse off as a result of it. As a child his character is established as weak and he is described in effeminate terms, always contrasted with the strength and might of Heathcliffe. Although he genuinely loves Catherine, he is not her equal in character and Nelly Dean observes that every effort was made in their household to pander to Catherine's wishes and not upset her at all. He proves unable to "settle" the issue of Catherine's relationship with Heathcliffe, and lacks the physical presence and physical strength to do so himself. In response to his wife's relationship with Heathcliffe, he locks himself in his library, that suggests a somewhat darker side of his character (perhaps reinforced by his abandonment of his sister to her marriage with Heathcliffe). Despite his good intentions, therefore, his love for Catherine leads to misery in his life, and we can't help as readers but feel sorry for his plight. Posted by accessteacher on Mar 16, 2009. |
