Why do you think Phoenix Jackson closed her eyes as she traversed the "log...across the creek" in this story?
what does this say about her character?

I would say that she does this because if she focuses just on the task at hand—keeping her balance—she can stay on the log, but if she allows her attention to wander at all, she's likely to fall. She protects herself by denying danger, and she stays on course by refusing to look up. This tells us how she's survived this long in such a treacherous society; she goes by her internal compass, not by what she sees outside her.
