It is Southern in the specific geographical references made, both by author and characters: " 'Well, Granny!' he laughed. "What are you doing there?"
'Lying on my back like a June-bug waiting to be fumed over, mister,' she said, reaching up her hand.

It is Southern in the ease with which the characters accept division between races, and address Phoenix as " Aunt Phoenix" and "Grandma."
