This is a contemptuous dismissal of Phoenix and of all African-Americans. It suggests that they wouldn't miss a spectacle, and/or a chance to see something impressive and get something free for themselves. In a single line, it dismisses their characters as shallow and petty. This is, of course, the exact opposite of what Phoenix has shown herself to be. She is going to town to get a bit of medicine for her injured grandson, in hopes of relieving his pain, at least for a while, and she's working hard to do so.
