The Story:
The timber merchant George Melbury had spared no expense in educating his only daughter, Grace. She had been away from home for one year, and he was eagerly awaiting her return. Giles Winterborne, an itinerant farmer and apple grower, also looked forward to Grace’s homecoming. Mr. Melbury had wronged Giles’s father many years before; to atone for this, he had half promised Giles that he should have Grace for his wife.
