Yanauluha America
The great medicine-man of Zuni mythology. After the first men had emerged from the wombs of the earth mother, they realized how unusual their own appearance was. Having adapted to life underground, they were strange creatures, black and scaly, with short tails, owl's eyes, huge ears, and webbed feet. In the uncertainty of that day they turned to the wisdom of Yanauluha, who had brought a vessel of water from the primeval ocean, seeds of plants, and a staff which had power to give life. He taught the Pueblo Zuni the arts of civilization: agriculture, husbandry, and the regulation of social life. His potent medicine staff, painted in bright colours and decorated with feathers, shells, and stones, represents the foundation of Zuni religion; it is the emblem of the first chief priest.
