Xiuhtecuhtli

Xiuhtecuhtli America
In Aztec cosmology the fire god Xiuhtecuhtli was the great pillar. Running through the whole universe, extending from the fireplace in mictlan, ‘the land of the dead’; through the fire in the homes of the earth, the domain of the serpent goddess Coatlicue and her usual consort Tlatecuhtli, a fantastic frog armed with enormous teeth, who is often portrayed as the devouring grave; straight through to the heavens, was the mysterious spindle of the fire god. As a psychopompos, ‘leader of souls’, Xiuhtecuhtli assisted the spirits of the deceased in their absorption into the earth.
