God of the Hottentos: a benevolent deity who inhabits the sky, sends rain for the crops, and speaks with the voice of thunder. The first men, according to Hottentot mythology, were endowed with the gift of rising again after dying, like the legendary hero Heitsi-eibib. Mortality is explained, as in most other African traditions, by a messenger myth. The moon is said to have sent the hare with the message that men would not die forever. When the hare got confused and informed men that they would not rise again, the moon was so annoyed that it split the hare's lip with a powerful blow.
