According to the Tahitians, a sea demon, one of the foes of the deep. Personifications of the dangers faced by mariners, Pahuanuiapitaaiterai, ‘the great one that opens to the sky’, and his kin were greatly feared. Other demons included Puatutahi, ‘coral rock standing alone’, Ahifatumoana, ‘sea serpent’, Aremataroroa, ‘long wave’, and Arematapopoto, ‘short wave’.
