Nyame
Nyame AfricaLiteral meaning: ‘shining one’. In Akan mythology he is the supreme deity. Nyame is called Nana Nyankopon, ‘grandfather Nyame who alone is the great one’; Amowia, ‘giver of light’; Amosu, ‘giver of rain’; Amaomee, ‘giver of sufficiency’; Brekyirihunuade, ‘he who knows or sees all’; Abommubuwafre, ‘consoler’; Nyaamanekose, ‘comforter’; Nana, ‘great ancestor’; and Borebore, ‘creator-architect’.
Eternal and unequalled, Nyame is a god to whom people may confidently turn in times of distress or hardship. The Akan stress the faithfulness of their god. They also credit him with making life a joy for creatures. He ‘opens up for man an appetite for life, makes life worth living for him’.
