Njirana
Njirana OceaniaAccording to the Jumu in western Australia, Njirana and Julana were father and son, but the latter could be seen as an extension of Njirana's personality. It is even his phallus, which is compared to a gigantic bull-roarer, the ceremonial stone swung on a string. Julana delights in the pursuit of women, whom he surprises by travelling beneath the sand. This renowned pair travelled the continent in ‘dream time’, when the ancestral spirits sleeping underground awoke and roved the earth, and their exploits form a cycle of myths. For an unknown reason Njirana is associated with dogs. He is supposed to have killed the bad ones, and favoured the good—the ancestors of present-day dogs. Julana too may have been a killer of rats.
