Njambi

Njambi Africa
The creator deity of the Lele people. His greatest gift, after life itself, is the tropical forest—‘a mighty house’. It is the source of all good things and the antithesis of the dry grassland.

Njambi ‘owns men’, protects, orders them, and avenges injustice. Animals in the forest are also under god's control, though they have been given to the Lele for their food. The spirits, mingehe, look to Njambi too. They inhabit the deep forest, and influence both the fertility of women and the hunting of men. Sorcerers are used to deal with the capricious mingehe.
