Kononatoo

Kononatoo America
Literally, ‘our maker’. The Warau Indians of Guiana believe that Kononatoo wished them to live in heaven. They descended to earth when a young hunter discovered a hole in the sky, but have been unable to return there because a fat woman got stuck in it. Moreover, the disobedience of the Warau on earth saddened the creator deity and deterred him from making another entrance to heaven. It appears that two girls swam in a forbidden lake and the offspring of one of them, begotten by a water god, started the species of serpents. The extreme reluctance of the Warau to bathe must relate to this myth.
