Dohkwibuhch America
In Snohomish mythology, the dilatory creator-changer deity. Mankind, this north-western Indian tribe believes, was dissatisfied with the way Dohkwibuhch had made the world. Though the first men could not talk together because of the different languages given to them by Dohkwibuhch, they soon discovered that everyone bumped their heads against the sky, which for an unknown reason was very low. It happened also that people climbed up high in the trees and went into the ‘sky world’.

A wise man devised a plan. He said that if all the people and all the animals and all the birds pushed at the same time, the sky could be lifted away from the earth. In order to co-ordinate this incredible sky pushing it was agreed that the cry ‘Ya-hoh’ would be the signal to raise the long poles prepared for the task. So the moment came; the cry was heard and the sky pushed until it reached the place where it is now. But a few people did not know...
