The divine trio of north Australian mythology. Two sisters and a brother who came to the earth via beralku, the island of spirits or the dead, and gave the landscape its shape and vegetation. This they accomplished with the aid of sacred sticks, called rangga, some of which were left behind at certain places as sacred objects. From the red-plumed solar deities, the Djanggawul sisters, came the first men and women, also called rangga. The rites of these ancestral sisters and brother, which are mainly concerned with fertility, are now carried out by men, though originally they were the possession of women. Such a change may have been brought about by rape, as was the case in another tradition.
