The Witch of Blackbird Pond is set in Wethersfield, Connecticut, a Puritan village, in the year 1687. Corn is the staple crop of this community—notice how often the family eats corn pudding, cornbread or corn cake! Other crops, such as onions, apples and flax, are also grown. The book mentions mostly small livestock, such as sheep, chickens and goats. In Chapter 10, for instance, Hannah talks about her goats, and in Chapter 4, Kit learns how to card wool from the sheep.
