   The first town Kit sees when she arrives in North America is the port of Saybrook in Connecticut Colony.  The harbor is bleak and gray, very different from the vibrant greens and blues of her home on the island of Barbados.  Through the dimness Kit can barely make out a "row of unimpressive shacks and the flash of raw new lumber" that make up the shipyard beyond the dock.  Kit is relieved to discover that Wethersfield, her destination, is still "some way up the river", and has hopes that the colony there will be more inviting (Chapter 1).
