In chapter 6 of "Wind In The Willows" Toad is visited by Mole, Badger, and Rat.  The forcefully drag him into Toad Hall and Badger tells Toad that it is past time for him to stop driving.

"You knew it must come to this, sooner or later, Toad," the Badger explained severely.  "You've ignored all the warnings we've given you.  You've squandered the money your father left you, and you're getting us animals a bad name with your furious driving and your smashes and you run-ins with the police. Independence is all very well, but we animals never allow our friends to make fools of themselves beyond a certain limit, and that limit has been reached." pgs. 97-98

Badger told Toad to stop because he was spending all his money, he was making a fool of himself, and he was not a good driver.
