I am wondering about the campus activities and local attractions for students who live on campus at Wilkes University in PA.

I read that half of the students commute, so does that mean that there isn't as much to do around campus for the people who live on campus with nowhere to go and no way to really get around? I know that some schools are like this, with nothing at all to do, so I would like to know in advance what I am getting myself into if I go there, since I would be living on campus.

Formerly a satellite campus of Bucknell University, Wilkes College of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, became independent in 1940, and achieved university status 50 years later. Currently, there are approximately 2200 students enrolled. About 200 students are housed in the school's largest dormitory, Evans Hall. Recently renovated, Lawrence Roth Hall (formerly the Chesapeake/Delaware) is an all-freshman dorm, housing about 70 students. More than 20 mansions and homes have also been converted to dormitory use.

Wilkes includes a TV station, FM radio station, weekly newspaper and yearbook. The university hosts live concerts, including past shows featuring Billy Joel, Alanis Morissette, Busta Rhymes and Dashboard Confessional. Students are given access to campus athletic facilities as well as free YMCA use of pool, gym, basketball courts and racquetball courts. At least four shows are presented each year by the Visual and Performing Arts Department.

Sports include (MEN) football, baseball, golf, wrestling, basketball, cross country, tennis, soccer; (WOMEN) basketball, cross country, tennis, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, softball, volleyball.

The city of Wilkes-Barre is also home to King's College. Area attractions include The Tubs, a state park that includes hiking and a waterfall. For the outdoorsman, the Pocono Mountains, Endless Mountains and the Lehigh Valley are nearby, and the Susquehanna River runs to the northwest of the city.
