As has been noted, Welty uses the same narrative technique in this story as she had used in The Ponder Heart, a technique she describes as a "monologue that takes possession of the speaker." This, of course, is one of the things that casts her work as popular fiction, giving it a down-home, folksy flavor. Welty's humor in this story is a special kind; it grows out of the tension that arises between pure comedy for its own sake and serious family disruption.
