The characters in the seven new stories in this collection suffer from the same frustrations and difficulties as those in Carver's earlier fiction. The difference is that some of them seem better able to cope with their predicaments. Aware of their sad plight, they nonetheless manage to preserve their dignity and their determination to survive.
