In "Whale Talk", what plan do T.J. and Mr. Simet agree on for letter requirements? Why is this plan clever?

    The lettering requirements for the swim twim were that in order to letter, the athlete had to meet his best time each event throughout the season. 

    This was clever for two reasons:

    1)  No other sport had such tough requirements, making it seem that the swim team was holding up Cutter's reputation for athletic excellence.

    2) The swimmers were so raw at the beginning of the season that they could only get better, thus the chances of meeting their best time in the first meet was almost assured.

    The athletic committe would catch on to this much later....
