How does TJ maintain his individuality while being a contributing member of the swim team?

    A good solid question. In some ways, TJ can't help but maintain his individuality, in that his mixed race background and adoption set him apart from some of the school. After that, though, TJ maintains his individuality by making a point of making this a time of variety and diversity, rather than uniformity. Look at Chapter 7 for an example. He ranks everyone on how much of an outsider they are. He also maintains his individuality by reshaping the goal of the letter jacket. He tries to make it easier for team members to earn it, not harder, which makes him stand out.
