Vichy government ( 1940 – 45 )
The pro-German French puppet government established after the Franco-German armistice in World War II. The Germans having occupied Paris, it was set up under Marshal Pétain in Vichy by the French National Assembly ( 1940 ) to administer unoccupied France and the colonies. Having dissolved the Third Republic, it issued a new constitution establishing an autocratic state. The Vichy government was never recognized by the Allies. In 1941 it granted Japan right of access and air bases in Indo-China, from which it was to launch its Malaya and Burma campaigns.
