Underground Railroad
A secret network in the USA for aiding the escape of slaves from the South in the years before the American Civil War . While the Railroad helped only a small number of slaves (perhaps 1000 per annum after 1850 ), it served as a valuable symbol for the abolitionist cause and was viewed in the South with far greater hostility than its actual size merited.
