The trial and execution of 19 supposed witches at Salem, Massachusetts. The hunt for witches began when girls in the minister's household believed themselves bewitched. Panic about devil worship and resultant accusations spread through surrounding towns until 50 people were afflicted and 200 had been accused. Increase Mather and Governor Sir William Phips managed to halt the witch craze in October 1692 .
