Macquarie, Lachlan
Macquarie, Lachlan ( 1762 – 1824 )Scottish-born Australian colonial administrator. He served as governor of New South Wales ( 1809 – 21 ); the colony was chiefly populated by convicts, but during his term of office he improved its prosperity, expanded opportunities for former convicts, and promoted public works, further settlement, and exploration.
