Langton, Stephen ( c. 1150 – 1228 )
English prelate. His reputation rests mainly on his promotion of the interests of the English Church in the face of conflicting pressures from the papacy and the English throne. As Archbishop of Canterbury he defended the Church's interests against King John , was intermediary during the negotiations leading to the signing of Magna Carta, and protected the young Henry III against baronial domination.
