Keating, Paul ( John Keating ) ( 1944 –   )
Australian Labor statesman, Prime Minister ( 1991 – 96 ). He entered politics in 1969 when he became a member of the House of Representatives. He served as federal treasurer ( 1983 – 91 ) and deputy Prime Minister ( 1990 – 91 ) under Bob Hawke , whom he replaced as Premier in 1991 . His term of office was notable for a vociferous campaign to make Australia a republic as well as for measures to combat high unemployment.
