Károlyi, Mihály, Count
Károlyi, Mihály, Count ( 1875 – 1955 )Hungarian statesman. A liberal, he favoured a less pro-German policy for Austria-Hungary and supported equal rights for all nations within it. There was no hope of achieving this until the empire collapsed ( November 1918 ), when Hungary proclaimed itself a republic with Károlyi as President. When in March 1920 he learned that Hungary must cede territory to Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia he resigned and was replaced by Béla Kun 's Communist regime.
