Karadžić, Radovan ( 1945 –   )
Serbian political leader. He practised psychiatry in Sarajevo until 1990 , when he helped found the Serbian Democratic Party. In 1992 , when the Bosnian Serbs declared an independent state, the Republika Srpska, within Bosnia and Herzegovina , Karadžić became its President. With the support of Serbian President Slobodan Milošević , he instituted a ruthless campaign ( 1992 – 95 ) to drive non-Serb Bosnians from the republic. In 1995 , when Milošević withdrew support, Karadžić reluctantly signed the US-brokered Dayton peace accord. Twice that year he was indicted by the UN for war crimes, including ‘ethnic cleansing’.
