Janata Party
Janata PartyIndian political organization. A grouping of mostly right‐wing Hindu political parties, it was based upon the Jana Sangh (People's Party, founded 1951 ). The so‐called Janata Front was a broad coalition formed to oppose Indira Gandhi in 1975 . The Janata Party proper was formed in 1977 as a coalition under Morarji Desai ; it won the 1977 election and formed a government that endured until the end of 1979 . In 1989 an anti‐Congress National Front, Janata Dal, was formed by V. P. Singh , who was briefly Prime Minister ( 1990 ); but the party split over the issue of the Untouchables (the people with the lowest status in the caste system) and the Congress (I) Party returned to power.
