Hamilton, Alexander

Hamilton, Alexander ( c. 1757 – 1804 )
US Federalist politician. He served under George Washington as First Secretary of the Treasury ( 1789 – 95 ) and established the US central banking system. Hamilton was a prime mover behind the Federalist Party's commitment to strong central government in the aftermath of American independence. He died from a gunshot wound after a duel with Aaron Burr .
