haciendaA large estate with a dwelling-house, originally given by monarchs in Latin America as a reward for services done. Such estates are known as estancias in Argentina and fazendas in Brazil. The first major eruption of violence, calling for the break-up of the haciendas, occurred in Mexico in 1910 . Most Latin American countries experienced similar demands during the 20th century, and they have remained a major political issue.
