Oxford Dictionary of World History | Frank, Anne

Frank, Anne ( 1929 – 45 )
German Jewish girl. Her diary, first published in 1947 , records the experiences of her family living for two years in hiding from the Nazis in occupied Amsterdam. They were eventually betrayed and sent to concentration camps; Anne died in Belsen from typhoid. Her diary has been translated into more than 30 languages, including an English version, and has become a symbol of the suffering of European Jews at the hands of the Germans.
