Edgar the Aetheling (from Anglo-Saxon aetheline, ‘prince’) ( c. 1052 – c. 1125 )
The grandson of Edmund Ironside. His father's death ( 1057 ) in exile left Edgar as the heir to Edward the Confessor in 1066 , but because of his youth he was rejected in favour of Harold II . On Harold's death at the Battle of Hastings the Witan chose Edgar as king but, despite his involvement in a rebellion against William I ( 1069 ), he was unable to organize any further resistance and became a member of William's court ( 1074 ).
