Camden, Battle of
Camden, Battle of ( 16 August 1780 )A battle of the American War of Independence in which some 2000 American militiamen under Horatio Gates were defeated when attacked by Cornwallis 's army 193 km (120 miles) north-north-west of Charleston, South Carolina. Gates was replaced by Nathanael Greene as commander of the Southern Army, which revenged itself at the Battle of King's Mountain in October that year.
