Acheson, Dean
Acheson, Dean ( Gooderham Acheson ) ( 1893 – 1971 )US politician. He served as Assistant Secretary of State, Under‐Secretary, and Secretary of State ( 1949 – 53 ), urging international control of nuclear power in the Acheson–Lilienthal Report of 1946 , formulating plans for NATO ( North Atlantic Treaty Organization ), implementing the Marshall Plan , and upholding the Truman Doctrine of US support for nations threatened by communism.
