West Point Military Academy | Students Speak Out On Overall Experience

West Point crams as much as possible into the four-year experience. You make a lot of sacrifices, but you also get rewarded with opportunities. The first year sucks—no doubt about it. Cadet Basic Training is a little over six weeks, and it is not fun. But it is not supposed to be fun, either. You learn basic soldier skills, how to follow, and how to perform under stress. The second summer is a little better; you get to go to Fort Knox, where you are introduced to small-unit tactics and begin to gain a combined arms perspective. After the second summer, you have a lot of say as to how you spend your summers, which is a very good thing.”

“I think my educational experience is far better than most of my friends at other colleges. And, I got it at a much better price! This great education is free. You have to work hard and be willing to serve your country. When we graduate and pin on those gold bars of a second lieutenant, we have the opportunity of a lifetime ahead of us. We launch a career with good pay and benefits. The opportunities for success are endless.”
