My question is about Nicholas Sparks' novel "The Notebook." At the ending, the character Duke is with Ally. But do they die in the end? I am confused.

I know that he talks about her unbuttoning his shirt, but, he also says," My legs wobble, my eyes are blurred, and my heart is beating funny inside my chest. I struggle with the knowb, and in the end it takes two hands and three truckloads of effort." Now to me this sounds as if he is slowly passing. Maybe I'm wrong but what do you think? Do they die in the end?

It is somewhat ambiguous what happens, but in the sequel, The Wedding, we learn that only Allie has died and that Noah is still alive.

Like he said, it tells you in the sequel The Wedding.
I think that the reason that it is talking about his eyes are blurry and his heart is beating. is because he knows that she loves him. He also knows that she is going to pass and it is taking everything it has for him to go on and leave his love behind.
But everything that he wanted was just reassured by that passage. She loves him just as much as he loves her.
