    I think Momaday is talking about when the Kiowa were still a "free" tribe. They were still hunters and raiders roaming the plains of Oklahome, untill they were allocated to a reservation and forced to live there, which in a sense killed their free spirit. It was included how she witnessed the last Sun Dance ceremony and from then on she lived a life of assimilation
