Members of the Ku Klux Klan were charged with setting the bomb at the 16th Street Baptist Church in 1963. Bob F. Cherry, Thomas Blanton, Herman Cash, and  Bob "Dynamite Bob" Chamblis set the delayed timer bomb that blew up the church on a Sunday morning. The attack was a reaction to the many protests and demonstrations by those who were in support of integration. All except for one of men were charged for the murders of the girls and sentenced to life in prison. Herman Cash was never charged and died in 1994.

22 people were injured in the bombing and four young girls were killed; Addie Mae Collins(14), Denise McNair(11), Carole Robertson(14) and Cynthia Wesley(14). Director, Spike Lee did a documentary about the incident titled "4 Little Girls". It received an Oscar Nomination for Best Documentary .
