Semi-conscious, he hears the voice of Fiver saying, "You are closer to death than I" (Chapter 47). The nearness of death reminds him of an event that occurred earlier, in Chapter 17, "The Shining Wire", when he was caught in a wire snare and very nearly died. To the rabbits, the wire is symbolic of death, and Bigwig's realization of its closeness shocks him back to consciousness.
